Anton and Francois Malan, direct descendants of the French Huguenot winemaker, Jacques Malan, waited patiently for ten years for their vineyard blocks to age to perfection in order to select the best possible grapes for this artisan creation.

Only the best barrels of each variety were selected, blended and aged for two years in small French oak barrels. A reflection of our Rainbow’s End terroir and one of the best wines our estate has produced to date.

    Awards:

    Family Reserve 2011 – John Platter 2015 – 4.5 Stars

Family Reserve 2012 – Nominated for John Platter 2016 – 5 stars (Achieved 4.5 stars)

  • Merlot

Neil Pendock rates our Merlot as one of the best in the country.

Our 2010 vintage was selected as one of only 3 SA Merlot’s to be served by SAA.

SA climate is not conducive to producing good Merlot, it is too warm. Rainbow’s End with its high-lying slopes has lower temperatures on average, correcting the problem. Merlot is planted 550m above sea level on our highest slopes.

This is a fruit driven Merlot with plums and mulberry on the nose, low alcohol levels, smooth and well integrated palate, with none of the greenness that South African Merlot’s tend to be known for. We go through great lengths to produce a well structured and concentrated Merlot.

    Awards:

Merlot 2010 – South African Airways on board wine selection: Premium Class

Merlot 2012 – Top 100 Wines in SA (one of only 2 Merlot’s)

  • Cabernet Sauvignon

Banghoek is a great area for Cabernet Sauvignon.

We only pick Cabernet Sauvignon in the last week of March/first week of April.

Slow ripening and picking at optimal ripeness allows a lower alcohol vol.

Something in between Old and New World style. Accessable at a young age but can also age for up to 6 years.

This wine pleases old style and new world fruit style Cabernet supporters.

It balances the blackcurrant/cassis fruit and the earthy, barnyard old style character very elegantly.

    Awards:

Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 – Michelangelo International Wine Awards – Gold Medal

    Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 – IWSC ( International Wine & Spiritus ) – Silver outstanding

Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 – Michelangelo International Wine Awards – Gold Medal

    Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 – John Platter 2016 – 4 stars

  • Cabernet Franc LTD Release

This wine is Limited for the following reasons:

Only one block on our farm (0.8 hectare) that is 100% dedicated to this label.

A single clone, 312, is used for the Ltd Release

No one in SA makes a Cabernet Franc from this clone alone, making it very unique and offering you something you cannot get anywhere else.

Yearly we produce a mere 250-350 cases of the Cabernet Franc Ltd Release.

All this being said, it is not necessarily a better wine than our Cabernet Franc, it just possesses other qualities that sets it apart. And of course there is a very limited amount available yearly. It has a more fruity body with more prominent red fruit flavours and is quite lively on the pallet.

    Awards:

Cabernet Franc Limited Release 2011 – Nominated for a John Platter 2014 5 star rating (Received 4.5 stars)

Cabernet Franc Limited Release 2012 – John Platter 2015: 4.5 stars

Cabernet Franc Limited Release 2013 – Nominated for a John Platter 2016 5 star rating (Received 4.5 stars)

    Clone 1 and 214.

For it’s price it is arguably the best Cabernet Franc in SA for the last 5 years, competing with bigger and more expensive brands.

This being said there aren’t many single cultivar Cabernet Franc’s in SA.

This is a smooth easy drinking wine, especially if you keep in mind it is a 2012 with an aging potential of up to 8 years. Nuances of dark cherry, earthy, black berries, tobacco and black forest cake. There is underlying fynbos and lavender but no heavy vegetativeness.

  • Shiraz

Produced from the oldest block on the farm

Differentiates itself from other Shiraz in SA by being not too spicy but rather more fruit driven, this wine is produced in a French Style lending it similar characteristics to a Rhone style Shriaz.

It is a more classic wine produced from a cooler area

Three clones are used in the production i.e. 174 and 99 (French) and 9 (Argentinian giving the fruity character)

The first wine made on Rainbow’s End Estate in 2002.

  • Rosé

The Rosé is a dry crisp wine consisting of a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz.

In the production of the Red Wines we must sacrifice quantity for quality by running some juice off in order to increase skin contact to maximize concentration. The juice is then kept and made into a lovely Rosé.
